Piles or Hemorrhoids are a condition in which the veins around the rectum and anus get inflamed. They become distended and take on a bulgy appearance. They are caused due to increased pressure in the anal canal. They are painful and can cause discomfort when sitting, walking etc. It should not be mistaken for fissures and fistulae. Internal hemorrhoids lie inside the anal canal, where they primarily cause the symptom of intermittent bleeding, usually with bowel movements.

External hemorrhoids lie just outside the anal opening, where they cause symptoms of discomfort, swelling, itching.

External hemorrhoids cause problems keeping the ano-rectal area clean, after bowel movements, but it is essential to keep it as clean as possible.  As hemorrhoids generally get worse as time goes by.
